The project is dedicated to the exploration and conservation of sharks and their
environment, with a particular focus on the world’s greatest predator, the Great White Shark.

The project works with predominately eco-tourists, volunteers and local enthusiasts
to gather data on Great White Sharks and other shark species, correct negative
misconceptions about them and stop the needless slaughter of over 100 million sharks annually.

Current programs involve eco-tourism, public education, environmental advocacy as well as various social upliftment projects.

Cape Town International Airport, there is no extra cost for transport between Cape Town and the project.

Transport between the project & the nearest city is limited & not
easily accessible, but the nearest town to the project has a supermarket where groceries can be bought and DVD’s rented. The project provides transport between the volunteer house and town.

The surrounding area of the project has a fishing village with some schools and the basics like a pharmacy and doctors. The town is a mix of cultures and parts of the area consist out of informal settlements and parts of formal housing.

Local activities include:
• Rockpool walks where we will identify different species found in and around rock pools.
• Coastal walks to the lighthouse & nearby beaches, where we can collect and identify
shark egg cases.
• Coastal litter clean-ups are something we do regularly.
• Snorkeling in the kelp forest is a peaceful and stunning way to spend your day. Enjoying the unique marine ecosystem and maybe meeting some harmless catsharks along the way.
• Visit the dripping cave which has stalagmites, stalactites and the only freshwater cave pool in the area. Explore the wonder of time and nature.
• Shore-based whale watching during the southern right whale season (June –
November).
• Visits to the local animal shelter. We walk to dogs and spend some quality time with
them, giving (and receiving) much needed love and affection.
• Visit the seabird sanctuary

Other optional activities include:
• Boat-based whale watching in season (June – November)
• Cape Agulhas & Struisbaai – the southernmost point of Africa and the possibility of seeing stingrays up close & personal.
• Wine and beer tasting
• Horse Riding – beach rides
• Paintballing
• Quadbiking
• Hiking
• Sea kayaking
• Big Cat sanctuary visit
• Township Tours

Volunteers stay in a brick house situated five minutes from the harbour, which bustles with action and boats as people head out to sea. The house is very comfortable with dorm rooms; open plan kitchen & dining area; a lounge with television and DVD player, board games, and an outside braai area for those hot evenings. There is a small supermarket nearby and the house is located in a safe and beautiful part of town, where you can freely walk around during the day. The project will provide transport to town for allocated shopping days.

No Sea Days
On the days going out to sea is not possible, due to weather or sea conditions, alternative excursions or activities may be arranged.
🦈 Volunteers will alternate between:
🦈 Staying in the area
🦈 Receiving a lecture
🦈 Watching appropriate documentaries
🦈 Data entering
🦈 Leaving for excursions outside of town

The weather along the Western Cape of South Africa is unpredictable & going out to sea will not always be possible.
Nevertheless, the area where the project is situated enjoys more shelter than many other coastal towns, allowing the project to head out to sea more often than one would assume.
The days when the sea conditions are not favourable for heading out on the boat will be days filled with either land-based activities or then consequently free time to volunteers.
Often the weather is favourable for days in the end & the boat goes out to see for a few
consecutive days – a forced break will then be added to ensure that even gets some rest.
Leave days can be discussed with the project coordinator should a volunteer stay for longer than 2 weeks.

The cost of the programme will cover accommodation, lectures and regular trips to the sea.
Depending on the applicant’s habits and lifestyle, we usually suggest adding to their monthly budget of about $505 – $673 for their souvenirs, excursions, entertainment, groceries, and other personal daily needs. The volunteer house has a fully equipped kitchen where volunteers can prepare meals.
