The project is a working farm located on 35 hectares of land that has been transformed to include a forever home for some of the special needs and retired cheetahs. We are dedicated to fighting for the future survival of the cheetah by focusing on education and research.
To this end, we strive:
• To ethically conserve the cheetah species and protect it from further endangerment or extinction.
• To educate and raise awareness amongst students and the general public of the
dangers that the cheetah faces, along with the efforts that can be made to reduce these threats.
• To advance knowledge about cheetah’s health, fertility and genetics through the ethical research conducted in our facilities.
• To offer university internships and research opportunities to students and work together with universities and other conservation projects to better understand the plight that the cheetah faces, and work towards the long term survival of the cheetah.
• To provide domestic and international volunteers an unforgettable opportunity to work closely with cheetahs, contribute to the conservation of this precious species, and promote the conservation of the cheetah in their communities.
• To provide a facility for hand-raised ambassador cheetahs and a safe sanctuary for
retired animals.
• To support future genetic diversity of the cheetah through genetic introduction and
breeding in scientifically based ethical programs.
No additional vaccinations are required for working with our animals, we are in a Malaria-free area so no Anti-Malarial medication is required. There are no special requirements for our project, but please visit your nearest travel clinic & speak to your travel doctor about the necessary vaccinations before going on your trip.
Cape Town International Airport & we have a close relationship with our partners who provide all the transport of our volunteers.
The town is about 8 km away & offers a private hospital, doctors, dentist & many restaurants and supermarkets. Cape Town is 59 km away & our volunteers utilise our partners for tours and shuttle services.
We are situated in the Winelands region of Cape Town with many many wineries
surrounding us. We are surrounded by farms (orchards, cows, and horses). We are only 10 minutes from the town center, which has a range of shops, cafes, cinemas, and pubs.
There is plenty to keep you busy in the area, whether you stay close by or venture further towards Cape Town or along the coast. There are festivals, wildlife sightings, hikes, wine tastings...whatever takes your fancy. We encourage you to use your time off (2 days per week) to explore all that Cape Town and the Western Cape has to offer including:
• Wine tasting
• Whale watching
• Garden Route
• Table Mountain
• Cape of Good Hope
• Exploring Cape Town and its beautiful beaches and hiking trails
Accommodation: It is a brand-new state of the art volunteer house. It has one central living area with a large outdoor deck overlooking the cheetah camps and orchards. It includes the kitchen, lounge and dining area as well as the laundry room.
Each side of the living area is a wing, both sides have 2 double rooms, 2 single rooms and 2 bathrooms each. There is a private flat on each end – one will accommodate our Volunteer Coordinator and the other can also be used for “working holiday” volunteers or anyone who requires private accommodation.
Laundry: The domestic staff will change bed linen and towels once a week and volunteers are free to use the laundry facilities in between.
Activities include, but will not be limited to:
• Cleaning enclosures and refilling water bowls
• Preparing and feeding food to the animals – they are carnivores, so this involves
handling raw meat!!
• Assisting with maintenance and other group activities
• Planning and helping with animal enrichment (walks, treats, toys, etc)
• Babysitting the younger animals when required
• Assistance with the farming activities such as harvesting grapes, olives and/or guavas.
