If you’re planning a family holiday in Istria, you’ll quickly discover that not all beaches are the same. Some have shallow water that’s perfect for toddlers, while others are better suited to older children who love snorkelling, exploring rocky coves or spending the whole day by the sea.

During our stay in Istria, we explored a number of beaches around Novigrad, Rovinj and Medulin. While every family has different priorities, these are the beaches we think stand out for their combination of safe swimming, beautiful scenery and family-friendly facilities.

What Makes a Great Family Beach in Istria?

One of the things that surprised us most about Istria was just how varied the coastline is. Within a short drive, you can find everything from sandy beaches with shallow water to quiet rocky coves where the sea is so clear you can watch fish swimming around your feet.

Unlike destinations where soft sand stretches for kilometres, many Croatian beaches are made up of smooth pebbles, rocks or concrete bathing platforms. That might sound unusual at first, but we quickly discovered why so many families return year after year. The water is incredibly clean, the scenery is beautiful and there are plenty of safe places for children to swim.

When choosing a family beach, we think these are the things that matter most:

Safe, shallow water for confident and beginner swimmers.
Natural shade or nearby trees during the hottest part of the day.
Toilets and somewhere to grab lunch or an ice cream.
Easy parking and simple access with younger children.
Calm water for swimming, paddleboarding and snorkelling.
Enough space to spend the whole day without feeling crowded.

The beaches below each offer something a little different, so the best choice really depends on the type of family holiday you’re planning.

1. Mareda Beach, Novigrad

Best for Relaxed Family Beach Days

Mareda Beach was the beach we visited most during our time in Istria, largely because we were staying nearby at Aminess Maravea Camping Resort, around a ten minute drive from Novigrad old town. Being able to wander down to the water whenever we felt like a swim quickly became one of our favourite parts of the holiday, and it also made a fantastic base for exploring many of western Istria’s other beaches.

Free parking is available nearby, and there are toilets, cafés and plenty of facilities within easy walking distance, making it a very convenient beach for families.

If you’re expecting long stretches of soft sand, Mareda might surprise you. Like many beaches in Croatia, it’s made up of pebbles, natural rock and paved sunbathing areas rather than sand. We’d packed boogie boards, thinking we’d be catching waves, but quickly realised the rocky shoreline makes them far less practical here. Water shoes, on the other hand, were one of the best things we brought and made getting in and out of the sea much more comfortable.

If you’re visiting Croatia’s pebble beaches for the first time, don’t skip water shoes. They made walking over the rocks far more comfortable for our whole family and quickly became one of the most-used items we packed. You can view and compare water shoes here.

What really impressed us was the water. Even standing knee-deep in the shallows, it was easy to spot tiny fish weaving between the rocks. We also saw plenty of sea cucumbers resting on the seabed, the occasional little crab and, every now and then, a jellyfish gently drifting past. Seeing that much marine life became part of the fun rather than something to worry about.

Our two girls enjoyed the beach in completely different ways. Our youngest was happiest paddling in the shallows with her little net, collecting shells, unusual rocks and trying to catch tiny fish for a closer look. Our oldest was ready for a bit more adventure. She loved snorkelling, swimming further out to our hired stand-up paddleboard and taking turns launching herself down the slide on our pedal boat before climbing straight back up to do it all again.

Although the sea was beautiful, we often found ourselves using the nearby tidal pool as well. It provided a calmer place for our four-year-old to splash around while still enjoying the same coastal setting, and it was a great option when she wanted a break from the open water. We found ourselves moving between the sea and the pool throughout the afternoon depending on what the girls felt like doing.

One thing we really appreciated was how relaxed the beach felt. Even in late May there was plenty of room to spread out, and mature trees provided welcome pockets of shade throughout the day. It never felt rushed or overcrowded, making it the sort of place where you could happily spend a few hours or an entire afternoon.

💙 Our family tip: Pack a small children’s beach net and a snorkel set if you’re travelling with younger kids. Our youngest happily spent ages searching the shallows for shells, little fish and interesting sea creatures while we could simply sit back and enjoy the incredible Adriatic views.

Where to Stay, Eat & Explore

If you’re planning to spend several days exploring the beaches around Novigrad, we think Aminess Planet Camping Maravea Resort is one of the best family bases in the area. We stayed here for a week and loved being able to walk straight to Mareda Beach in just a few minutes. The resort has pools, playgrounds, sports facilities and direct access to the coastline, making it ideal for families. It ended up being one of those places where everything felt easy. The girls could swim, ride their scooters around the resort, visit the playgrounds and be back at our accommodation within minutes, making for a genuinely relaxing family holiday. If camping or holiday homes aren’t quite your style, there are several excellent alternatives nearby. Aminess Laguna Hotel is a great value family hotel just a few minutes from the beach with pools and easy access to Novigrad, while Aminess Maestral Hotel is ideal if you’re looking for a full-service resort with spa facilities, multiple pools and plenty of activities for children. If you’d prefer to stay in the heart of the old town, Hotel Nautica offers spacious rooms within walking distance of Novigrad’s marina, restaurants and waterfront promenade.

For meals, our favourite was Loop Restaurant inside the resort. We actually intended to try several restaurants around Novigrad, but Loop kept drawing us back. We ended up eating there four different evenings before cooking at our accommodation on the remaining nights. The food was consistently excellent, the staff were fantastic with the kids and the relaxed atmosphere made it an easy choice after a day at the beach.

If you’d like to eat somewhere different, Lungomare offers excellent seafood overlooking the water, while Konoba Alta Marea is a great choice for traditional Istrian cuisine.

If you’re visiting without your own equipment, paddleboards, pedal boats and kayaks are all available to hire nearby, making it easy to spend a full day on the water. Novigrad is also a great base for boat cruises, dolphin-watching trips and wine or olive oil experiences throughout western Istria. 2. Karpinjan Beach, Novigrad

Best for Easy Access, Calm Swimming & Staying Close to Novigrad

Just south of Mareda, Karpinjan Beach offers another fantastic family-friendly option if you’re staying around Novigrad. With calm, crystal-clear water, plenty of natural shade and easy access to the town, it’s easy to see why it’s such a popular choice for both locals and visitors.

Like many beaches along the Istrian coast, Karpinjan is made up of pebbles, rocky sections and paved sunbathing areas rather than sand. Water shoes are well worth packing, making it much more comfortable to explore the shoreline and enter the sea.

The water here is beautifully clear, making it a great place for swimming and snorkelling. Younger children can enjoy paddling close to shore while older kids will have fun exploring around the rocks and spotting the small fish that are common throughout this stretch of coastline.

One of Karpinjan’s biggest advantages is its location. After a morning at the beach, it’s an easy walk into Novigrad’s charming old town where you’ll find cafés, restaurants, ice cream shops and the picturesque harbour. If you’re looking for a beach that combines swimming with a relaxed afternoon exploring town, Karpinjan is an excellent choice.

Families will also appreciate the mature pine trees that provide welcome shade throughout much of the day. Combined with nearby cafés, showers, changing facilities and sun loungers available for hire, it has everything needed for an easy family beach day.

💙 Our family tip: If you’re spending a few days in Novigrad, it’s worth visiting both Mareda and Karpinjan. They each have a slightly different feel, and the short distance between them makes it easy to enjoy both during your stay.

If you’re planning to explore several beaches around Novigrad, we’d still recommend Aminess Planet Camping Maravea Resort as one of the best family bases in the area. Although it’s a little further north, it’s only a short drive or bike ride from Karpinjan and gives you easy access to several of the region’s best beaches. Other Nearby Options

If you’d prefer to stay closer to Novigrad’s centre, Aminess Maestral Hotel is an excellent family-friendly resort with indoor and outdoor pools, children’s facilities and direct access to the coast. Boutique Hotel Nautica is another great choice beside the marina, perfect if you’d like to walk to restaurants and explore the old town. Families looking for more space will also find plenty of well-equipped holiday apartments around Karpinjan and central Novigrad.

For a coffee or light meal, Lido Bar Karpinjan is conveniently located right beside the beach. If you’re looking for a larger meal afterwards, it’s worth walking into Novigrad where you’ll find plenty of excellent restaurants along the waterfront. We particularly enjoyed Loop Restaurant at Aminess Maravea Resort during our stay, while Konoba Alta Marea is another popular choice for traditional Istrian cuisine.

Beyond the beach itself, Karpinjan makes a great starting point for exploring Novigrad’s waterfront promenade and historic old town. You can also hire bicycles to ride the coastal paths or join one of the area’s popular boat cruises, dolphin-watching trips or family-friendly excursions around western Istria. 3. Bijeca Beach, Medulin

Best for Sandy Beaches, Young Children & Easy Family Swimming

If you’re travelling with younger children and hoping to find a sandy beach in Croatia, Bijeca Beach is hard to beat. Stretching for over a kilometre along Medulin’s waterfront, it’s one of the very few natural sandy beaches in Istria and a favourite with families looking for calm, shallow water.

Unlike many of the region’s pebble beaches, Bijeca’s soft sand makes it ideal for toddlers who want to build sandcastles, dig holes or simply paddle safely in the shallows. The sea remains shallow for quite a distance, allowing younger children plenty of room to play while parents can relax nearby. It’s one of those beaches where families can comfortably spend an entire day.

The beach is also one of the most well-equipped in Istria. Sun loungers and umbrellas are available to hire, while showers, changing rooms and public toilets make the day much easier with children. During summer, you’ll also find inflatable water attractions, pedal boats, beach volleyball and other activities to keep older kids entertained.

Although Bijeca is far busier than quieter beaches like Mareda, that’s part of its appeal. The lively promenade behind the beach is filled with cafés, restaurants, ice cream shops and small stores, so everything you need is within a few minutes’ walk.

While we love the quieter feel of some of Istria’s smaller beaches, Bijeca is a fantastic option if your family enjoys having plenty of facilities close by. If you’re visiting during July or August, arriving earlier in the morning will usually give you the best choice of spots before the beach becomes busier.

💙 Our family tip: If you’re travelling with younger children, pack a small bucket and spade. Bijeca is one of the few places in Istria where they’ll be able to spend hours building sandcastles without having to work around pebbles and rocks.

If you’re looking for the convenience of staying close to the beach, Arena Hotel Holiday is one of the most popular family-friendly options, just a short walk from Bijeca Beach. Families wanting apartment-style accommodation with extra space should also consider the many holiday apartments around Medulin’s waterfront, many of which are within easy walking distance of both the beach and promenade. For a more casual meal by the water, Octopus Restaurant is another popular choice with families thanks to its beachfront setting and varied menu.

4. Cuvi Beach, Rovinj

Best for Families Wanting Space, Shade & Easy Access to Rovinj

Cuvi Beach is one of Rovinj’s longest and most popular family beaches, stretching for almost a kilometre along the beautiful coastline just south of the town centre. Despite its popularity, the beach is large enough that it rarely feels overcrowded, giving families plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the day.

Like many beaches in Istria, Cuvi is made up of smooth pebbles, rocky sections and paved sunbathing areas rather than sand. The sea is exceptionally clear, and the gently sloping shoreline makes it a comfortable place for both younger children and confident swimmers. Water shoes are well worth packing, especially if you plan to explore the rocky edges of the beach where you’ll often spot fish and other marine life.

One of Cuvi’s biggest attractions is the natural setting. Tall pine trees line much of the beach, creating welcome shade throughout the day and making it easy to escape the midday sun without needing to hire an umbrella. Behind the beach, walking and cycling paths wind through the surrounding parkland, making it easy to combine a swim with a stroll along the coastline.

Families will also appreciate just how well equipped the beach is. Toilets, showers, changing facilities, beach bars, restaurants, sun loungers, umbrellas and water sports hire are all available, so it’s easy to spend an entire day here without needing to leave. Canoes and kayaks are available to hire if you’d like to explore the coastline from the water.

If you’re visiting during the busiest summer months, arriving before mid-morning is worthwhile, especially if you’d like to hire loungers or find a shaded spot beneath the pines.

5. Lone Bay Beach (Plaža Lone), Rovinj

Lone Bay is one of Rovinj’s most beautiful beaches, tucked inside the peaceful surroundings of Golden Cape Forest Park (Zlatni Rt). Surrounded by towering pine trees and crystal-clear Adriatic water, it feels a little more secluded than some of the area’s larger beaches while still offering excellent facilities for families.

Like most beaches in Istria, Lone Bay is made up of smooth pebbles, natural rock platforms and paved areas for sunbathing. The sea is calm and exceptionally clear, making it one of the best places around Rovinj for swimming and snorkelling. Younger children can paddle in the shallows while older kids will enjoy exploring the rocky edges in search of fish and other marine life. Water shoes are highly recommended and make walking across the pebbles much more comfortable.

One of the standout features of Lone Bay is its natural setting. The beach sits within Golden Cape Forest Park, where shaded walking and cycling trails weave through fragrant pine trees all the way along the coastline. Even during the warmer months, it’s easy to find a patch of shade beneath the trees, making this a wonderful place to spend a full day outdoors.

Although Lone Bay feels wonderfully natural, it still offers many of the facilities families appreciate. Toilets, showers, cafés and nearby restaurants make spending the day here easy, while sun loungers and umbrellas are available to hire during the main summer season. If you’re visiting in peak season, arriving earlier in the morning is worthwhile to secure a good spot close to the water.

Many visitors combine a morning at the beach with an afternoon exploring Rovinj’s beautiful Old Town, making Lone Bay one of the easiest places to enjoy both the coastline and one of Croatia’s most picturesque towns in a single day.

Families wanting a more independent stay will also find plenty of apartments around Rovinj’s southern suburbs, offering easy access to both Lone Bay and the Old Town.

6. Katoro Beach, Umag

Best for Active Families, Resort Holidays & Water Sports

Katoro Beach is one of the most popular family beaches around Umag, offering a fantastic mix of crystal-clear water, excellent facilities and plenty of activities for all ages. Located within the Katoro tourist resort, it’s an easy place to spend an entire day without ever feeling short of things to do.

Like many beaches in western Istria, Katoro is made up of pebbles, natural rock platforms and paved areas for sunbathing rather than sand. Water shoes make exploring the shoreline much more comfortable, particularly for younger children who will be in and out of the water throughout the day.

The sea is beautifully clear and generally calm, making it ideal for swimming, snorkelling and paddleboarding. Around the rocky sections you’ll often spot small fish darting between the stones, giving children plenty to discover beneath the surface.

One of Katoro’s biggest strengths is its facilities. Families will find showers, toilets, changing rooms, cafés, beach bars and restaurants all within easy walking distance. Sun loungers and umbrellas are available to hire during the main season, while the surrounding resort area offers playgrounds, sports courts and plenty of open green space.

Unlike some of Istria’s quieter beaches, Katoro has a lively holiday atmosphere without feeling overly crowded. Mature pine trees provide welcome shade throughout the day, making it easy to take a break from the sun before heading back into the water.
